STEM CELL THERAPY FAQs
What is the latest science on erectile dysfunction and adult stem cell therapy?
>> DR. MARC PENN: Adult stem cell therapy offers some real potential hope for patients with erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction can occur from one of two mechanisms. One is a lack of inflow to the penis, and the other is excessive outflow.
By giving stem cells to the penis, we can improve inflow through the growth of microvasculature and small blood vessels, but stem cells are also able to recruit other cells to the shaft of the penis so that when it becomes erect, it actually blocks the venous outflow and maintains the erection longer.
How can stem cell therapy actually improve ED?
>> DR. PENN: Adult stem cell therapy in a male with erectile dysfunction can improve their symptoms in one of two ways. It can either improve the inflow of blood or prevent the outflow of blood. Ultimately, adult stem cell therapy can do one of two things. It can improve erectile dysfunction on its own or it can make a patient who is not responsive to Viagra and other PD-5 inhibitors responsive.
What is the treatment like for ED?
>> DR. PENN: At Okyanos we treat erectile dysfunction with autologous stromal vascular fraction. The patient undergoes a liposuction. We obtain the lipoaspirate. The lipoaspirate is put into the Tissue Genesis Icellator system. About an hour later, the stem cells in the lipoaspirate have been isolated. We then put a tourniquet at the base of the penis and we make two injections into the penis, remove the tourniquet and the procedure is done.
What about retreatment for ED?
>> DR. PENN: So, for those patients who feel they’ve gotten some benefit, but feel they could get more, we’re happy to discuss the opportunity for retreatment at Okyanos.
