Meet The Medical Team: Matthew Stiebel, MD
>>DR. MATTHEW STIEBEL: My name is Matt Stiebel. I am one of the treating physicians here at Okyanos. I’m working at Okyanos because of the chance to explore stem cells. I think that the next frontier in medicine is going to be biologics and to be a small part of that was really exciting for me.
Dr. Stiebel is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine.
He treats complex shoulder and knee injuries.
>>DR. STIEBEL: If you were to compare stem cells versus joint replacement surgery, I think it goes without saying that stem cell treatment is much less invasive. I think you have to worry a lot less about operative time. You have to worry a lot less about infection. And you have to worry a lot less about recovery time. So for those reasons I think stem cell treatment is very attractive.
I think that the quality of the physical plant, as well as the equipment, is as good or better than anything I’ve seen in the U.S. or Europe. Having the appropriate equipment makes stem cell treatment completely different than some locations around the world. I think that we can get the greatest amount of stem cells, but if you don’t put them in the joint perfectly you’ve wasted your time. We’re very fortunate here to have C-Arm Fluoroscopy and ultrasound so that I can verify putting stem cells exactly into a joint such as a hip joint.
I enjoy the outcomes. I enjoy it when people feel great after we’ve taken care of them.
This is a really nice place to work. I feel very lucky being able to work in a place like this. Being able to work with your friends and treat people and get outcomes is terrific.
