Meet The Medical Team: Matthew Goodwin, MD
>>DR. MATTHEW GOODWIN: I’m Dr. Matthew Goodwin. I’m a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon here at Okyanos. I work with the stem cell providers by harvesting the fat through liposuction.
Dr. Goodwin also practices in South Florida.
>>DR. GOODWIN: When we go into the operating room here it is just like when I’m operating in my own facility or the hospitals where I work. I feel that all the equipment we have here, all the safety measures, this is an up-to-date, state-of-the-art, safe facility.
So the primary goal of what we’re trying to do here is to obtain the fat and prepare it for stem cell therapy in the treatment. When I’m in the OR and I’m harvesting the fat, I start off by infiltrating the tissue with a tumescent solution. This is a mixture of saline, lidocaine and epinephrine. And we allow that medicine in there to take effect. It takes about ten minutes to work. It helps decrease the pain and decrease bleeding. And we collect the fat in a sterile canister, before sending it off for stem cell processing.
The amount of fat that we’re trying to remove is the amount that we need for the stem cell treatments. And typically we want to get about 120 mL of fat that’s removed. That’s about the size of a can of Coke. It takes several passes, and we get about 15 to 20 cc from each pass with the liposuction cannula. Often I’ll go back and remove more just so I can get a nice even distribution to try and contour the body for a nice post-operative result.
The stem cell therapy is the most important thing that we’re trying to do here. And then we’re also trying to be as safe as possible. We don’t want there to be any problems for you. But if we can get a nice silver lining with a little bit of contour benefit, patients will be pretty happy with that.
