Treating Back Pain
Can adult stem cell therapy help with back pain?
>> DR. MICHAEL PRICE: Low back pain is one of the most frequent conditions that we see and we like to see it because typically it’s something that we can really help with adult stem cell therapy. These are typically patients who have tried ibuprofen, therapy, rest. They may have even had a cortisone shot, but nothing is working.
When should a patient consider stem cell therapy for back pain?
>> DR. PRICE: For low back pain we like to recommend conservative standard treatments initially. So we want you to go through Motrin, rest, therapy, all the basic things. If you’re getting six to eight weeks out from a low back injury and nothing is working, this is where adult stem cells come in. We can obtain the cells, inject them directly around the spine, and through IV infusion we get a nice penetration and a good relief of low back pain.
Does stem cell therapy last or is it like getting cortisone shots?
>> DR. PRICE: The cortisone is what doesn’t last very long. In fact, if you go see most pain physicians, they’ll say well we expect three injections for your back. We say why would you have to say you need three? One injection of adult stem cells gives you some longevity, not just because of the immediate anti-inflammatory effect, but you also get some cell to cell interaction that helps decrease chronic inflammation that causes the pain.
Will stem cell therapy reduce the need for pain killers like opioids and narcotics?
>> DR. PRICE: Adult stem cells work wonderfully replacing narcotics. Narcotics are treating pain that is created by inflammation. Adult stem cells come in and decrease the inflammation to begin with. So we get a nice reduction in pain, the patient reduces the amount of narcotics they’re on and eventually some of them get off completely.
