The Lupus Foundation of America spotlights a proof of concept (POC) study out of Spain that shows promising results for stem cell therapy treatment. The sudy captured results using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to treat lupus nephritis.
The MSCs have immunosuppressive properties and were transplanted into three people of varying ethnic backgrounds who each responded favorably to the treatment. This small study supports further investigation and enrollment for a larger phase two study is already under way.
“Stem cell therapy is one of the most promising frontiers in lupus research today,” says the Lupus Foundation. “The Foundation was one of the first private funders of research into MSCs as a potential treatment for people with lupus.”
