Pete, 69
Melbourne Beach, FL
Hip Osteoarthritis

Treated at Okyanos May, 2016

Having been a ballet dancer for nearly 4 decades, Pete’s quality of life suffered greatly when osteoarthritis began to rob him of his ability to dance and perform. Seeking an alternative to joint replacement and a chance to return to the physically demanding art of ballet, Pete traveled to Okyanos to undergo treatment with adult stem cells for hip osteoarthritis.

More Stability, Less Pain: Peter’s Steps to Recovery

stem cells for hip osteoarthritis“I have been a ballet dancer for about 40 years. After an injury of my right hip left me in chronic pain (it was bone-on-bone and arthritic), I went to Okyanos for stem cell therapy and I am so glad I did. It was magnificent. I am back to performing and still improving after 8 months.

“As background, some friends tried to get me to go to a local bone marrow stem cell clinic but the doctor there told me I would not get very many stem cells. At Okyanos I ended up receiving over 108 million [nucleated] cells delivered by IV plus what was injected in my hip.

“About 5 years ago, I was standing by the bar swinging my leg according to the instructions of the ballet teacher and as I hit it to the right I noted a dull click. About 2 years later I was stepping on the dance floor I felt a sharp momentary pain. As I danced through the year I noticed I had restricted movement. I was committed to certain shows so kept on dancing. At the end of the season I had imaging that confirmed I was bone-on-bone and arthritic. I was prescribed a total hip replacement by my orthopedic doctor. By this time, whenever I walked I had nerve pain down my thigh to my knee. I had to lift my leg up to get into the car. I could not bend my knee without pain.

“After about a month following stem cell treatment I started feeling better. I was at the dance studio yesterday and showed the instructor how I can now sit down and tie my shoe. Before I had to walk with a peg leg as I could not articulate (bend) my leg. It is more stabilized and I no longer have pain. I still walk with a slight limp but am continuing to improve. Today, I will be performing again.

“Okyanos is excellent. The nursing staff were perfect. Shannon was very engaging and personable. Dr. Burton, the anesthesiologist, was very nice. Okyanos does not have a medical hospital feel to it. It was a non-threatening, cordial and pleasant experience.”

Why Stem Cells for Hip Osteoarthritis?

What research has shown us about osteoarthritis is that a great deal of joint degeneration and pain arises fundamentally as a result of persistent, low-grade inflammation.

Adult stem cells found in your body fat are uniquely qualified to address hip osteoarthritis and other orthopedic diseases, some of their key functions being:

  • Accelerated tissue repair and regeneration
  • Decreased inflammation
  • Modulation of abnormal immune responses
  • Prevention of premature cell death
  • Creation of new blood vessels
