Peripheral Neuropathy and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
Treated at Okyanos April, 2016
It was around 1971 that Dave, a Vietnam war veteran, began experiencing peripheral neuropathy pain. In 2000 his struggles continued with a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) made his daily life and job as an A/C contractor increasingly difficult.
By 2006 Dave and his wife had looked at stem cell therapy, but at that time the science and technology had not yet evolved to a point where it could be a treatment option for patients as it is today. Ten years later and still seeking a better quality of life, Dave opted to try Okyanos Cell Therapy.
The Freedom of Moving Independently
“I am very pleased that I did stem cell therapy at Okyanos. I am a Vietnam war veteran with peripheral neuropathy and rheumatoid arthritis due to Agent Orange exposure. My wife and I began researching stem cell therapy about 10 years ago, and I also made a visit to the Mayo Clinic. Unfortunately, there were no real options for me at that time.
“I first had symptoms of neuropathy in my legs about 45 years ago and my hands about 16 years ago. I was also diagnosed with RA affecting my wrists about 18 years ago. As an air conditioning contractor, I did a lot of the work with my hands and wrists, and I was always on my feet and knees. I was taking 3600mg Gabapentin and 1000mg Naproxen daily.
“I ran the business by myself for many years so having peripheral neuropathy and RA made my job difficult. About 30 years ago, I also had a silent heart. A couple of times, my neurologist mentioned that stem cell therapy could potentially help me. Unfortunately, he said he could not recommend a clinic.
“I heard about Okyanos from a good friend, went to a seminar and had a consult with Dr. Dolan. I then did my own due diligence on stem cell therapy and the Okyanos doctors. I consulted with my neurologist, and he was negative, despite having talked to me about stem cells previously. I went ahead with it because I was in a lot of pain. When I walked, I had to rely on my wife for support. I had suffered for a long time, and I felt it was worth it even if I only got half improvement.
“Since my stem cell therapy I have improved sensation in my legs and fingers. Without telling my neurologist I had gone to Okyanos, I went for a routine visit and he tested me and showed me the improvement in my EMG. He wanted to learn more after that.
“Both my wrists are improved. My right wrist, which had a lot of painful swelling, has improved greatly. My hip has improved, and I am off all the pain meds I was previously taking. My wife and I travel a lot, and it was very difficult for me on our vacations. When we cruised, I would have to go back to my room and rest because my legs hurt and my feet were very numb. After treatment at Okyanos, I went on a cruise and walked more than I ever have—without assistance from my wife—and instead of having to get off my feet, I would go out on my balcony and drink a glass of wine and enjoy the freedom of moving independently. I have even begun slow dancing with my wife and taking short walks in the morning.
“As far as Okyanos goes, I am impressed with the the whole process from the beginning to the present. The facility was spotless and the staff were very professional. Dr. Hartog and Dr. Burton made the procedure easy and comfortable. From our initial talks with Dr. Steve Ryland and Dr. Dolan up to the present, the experience has been one of kindness, respect and great caring from all the staff!
“I have been recommending Okyanos to my family and friends.”
Stem Cells for RA and Peripheral Neuropathy Pain
Symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and peripheral neuropathy pain often go hand in hand for patients due to the long-term common denominators of inflammation and tissue or nerve damage. Adult stem cells offer a comprehensive approach to tackling complex chronic pain disorders for their abilities to:
- Address inflammation
- Stimulate tissue repair/regeneration
- Prevent further or premature cell and tissue death
- Reduce scarring
- Modulate abnormal immune response, as is present in RA
