At Okyanos, our mission is to bring a new standard of care and a better quality of life to patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), a heart disease, using cardiac stem cell therapy.
There are approximately 2.2 million patients with coronary artery disease in the United States who would not likely benefit from additional:
Many people live with heart damage from a heart attack. Okyanos’ adult stem cell treatments bring a new option to these individuals and, as suggested by initial data from clinical trials, a better quality of life to heart disease patients. A number of clinical trials have suggested the procedure is safe and appears to be effective in reducing symptoms of heart disease.
Dr. Howard Walpole, Chief Medical Officer, leads our heart disease and stem cell therapy team. Dr. Walpole is a prominent cardiologist with over 25 years of experience in the field. Read more about Dr. Walpole here.
Okyanos Heart Institute uses adult stem cells sourced from your own adipose (fat) tissue. A summary of the procedure is as follows:
Located in, Freeport, The Bahamas, Our Center of Excellence is focused on safe and rigorously researched cardiac stem cell therapy. We are staffed with an experienced medical team, trained to deliver adult stem cell treatment in adherence to US surgical center standards.
At Okyanos Heart Institute, patients can expect advanced cardiac care and a highly personalized patient and family experience. Patients receive the potential benefits of stem cell treatment for the heart in a pristine outpatient facility with state-of-the-art equipment amongst the setting of beautiful Grand Bahama Island.

The literary name Okyanos (Oh – key – AH – nos) symbolizes the primary mechanism of action that these stem cells provide: the improvement of blood flow in heart tissue which has ischemia (lack of blood flow.)
One of the ways heart tissue becomes damaged is as a result of plaque deposits in the coronary arteries. This reduces the heart’s pumping mechanism which in turn forces the heart to work harder. Stem cells derived from a person’s own adipose (fat) tissue and delivered to a weakened heart stimulate the growth of new blood vessels, a process known as angiogenesis.
As demonstrated in the clinical trial known as “PRECISE,” restorative benefits of the treatment include:
In addition to PRECISE, a number of other cardiac cell therapy trials done at leading research institutions such as Texas Heart Institute, University of Miami and Minnesota Heart Institute have shown results that stem cell therapy can have a positive, measurable and persistent effect on the heart.
Okyanos’ Chairman and CEO Matt Feshbach explains our focus simply: “Okyanos Heart Institute was founded to bring a new option, backed by strong science and rigorous clinical trials, to CAD patients who have exhausted all other options. Maximizing the quality of life for heart disease patients, their families and our society is the singular focus of Okyanos.”
